On the risks and side effects of the Ukraine war
Negotiation instead of shooting – 5 suggestions how to get out of the NATO-Russia proxy war again
Dear present,
as a member of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), I am very pleased to be here with all of you on today’s nationwide day of action of the peace movement here in Berlin. I thank you very much for the invitation to speak to you in front of the Paul Löbe House of the German Bundestag.
I would also like to thank the organizers of this important event and the and to the previous speakers for the many important things that have already been said.
(some of which I will take up again here).
I sincerely hope that some of the many Members of Parliament who are working here will also take an interest in the concerns of the people in front of the House.
Which we are many: The number of signers:inside of the Open Letter. „Peace now!“ by Alice Schwarzer is now approaching 400,000!
The reason why we have gathered today and moved in front of this house is that is the war in Ukraine, which was started by Russia.
The increasing arming of the Ukraine by the NATO makes it more and more into a proxy war between NATO and Russia.
With more and more German participation. And more and more danger of escalation to world and nuclear war.
Concerning the use of nuclear weapons a short look back:
Atomic bombs have been used 2x so far – in 1945 by US pilots on two major Japanese cities. The one over Hiroshima was called „Little Boy“, had the low explosive power of 15.000 tons of TNT (by today’s of 15,000 tons of TNT (many of today’s have more than 100 times the explosive power), and it immediately killed about 45,000 of the city’s then 350,000 inhabitants. ner:innen of the city. By the end of 1945, nearly half of them were dead – many killed by blast waves and burns, but most of them had died from agonizing radiation sickness, untreated injuries and also hunger and starvation. thirst. Only a few of the injured and sick received medical care. Of the original 298 doctors, only 28 survived… Hence our admonition:
In case of a nuclear war we doctors will not be able to help you!
Is this alarmism? The people presented to us as „experts“, such as Liana Fix from the Körber Foundation claim that „Putin will not“.
This assumption has feet of clay. Among other things, it presupposes a completely flawless functioning of all mechanisms and actors. This has also been repeatedly nuclear power plants – which has since been proven to be false.
Roderich Kiesewetter, foreign-policy expert of the CDU/CSU
parliamentary group, even stated publicly on several occasions that the use of strategic nuclear weapons, and that the use of tactical nuclear weapons was tactical ones is not so bad. The population must be informed about this.
ACTUALLY, we need to educate the population about the following: The IPPNW has recently published its study „Nuclear Famine“ also in German.
„Nuclear Famine“. It shows: Even a regionally limited
nuclear war (if it could be limited at all) – with the deployment of
100 of the world’s 13,000 nuclear warheads – would trigger a „nuclear winter“ and thus a „nuclear famine.

ACTUALLY, we need to educate the population about the following: The IPPNW has recently published its study „Nuclear Famine“ also in German: „Nukleare Hungersnot“. It shows: Even a regionally limited nuclear war (if it could be limited at all) – with the use of 100 of the 13,000 nuclear warheads available worldwide – would trigger a „nuclear winter“ and thus a global famine. Which would then also overtake us here in the rich North and destroy many of us. For 1,000 of these warheads would be enough to make the earth uninhabitable…
The weekly newspaper „Die Zeit“ headlined this week on page 1:
„Suddenly the use of nuclear weapons is a real danger.“
Whoever accepts a nuclear war – even a „limited“ one – can only be called a hasardeur (or a hasardess, as in the case of our Foreign Minister…).
„Return of the Hasardeurs“ has been called by Willy Wimmer, CDU Defense State Secretary of State under Helmut Kohl, called his book, which he published on the 100th anniversary of the World War I in 2014. The parallels it points out between
then, when Europe slid into World War 1 with much bluster and cluelessness and today, when we are governed by people with great moral gestures and little and little knowledge of the facts, these parallels are frightening.

Let’s also look briefly at 2014:
NATO and the EU helped Arseniy Yatsenyuk seize power in Ukraine in order to drive Russia from its Black Sea base in Crimea with his help. The goal was to incorporate Ukraine into NATO and the EU. The result was its split with over 8 years of „small“ war there since then (according to the UN ~13,000 dead), the annexation of Crimea to Russia – and in the meantime the
big war between Russia and Ukraine since February this year.
What does it look like today?
